Men’s Aegon Match: Chapel Allerton v Heaton
On Sunday Chapel Allerton travelled away to Heaton for their first match of the Aegon season in Yorkshire County Division 1. In what promised to be a strong division Chapel A needed to get a result to get their season off to a good start.
We turned up on a chilly, grey morning with some of the outdoor courts unplayable due to overnight rain – therefore it was decided that the Number 1 and 2 players would play outside and the Number 3 and 4 players would play their singles on Heaton’s indoor courts.
The number 1 singles match was contested between Chapel A’s Matthew Tottey and Heaton’s head coach Matt McTurk. The first set went Heaton’s way with Matt McTurk’s huge lefty serve and precise volleying meaning Tottey struggled to get a foothold in the match. The second set was much tighter with Tottey saving match points at 5-4 but eventually falling 7-5. In the number 2 singles match it was Chapel A’s Jacob Dunworth taking on one of Heaton’s own youngsters. Jacob got off to a good start but ended up losing a tight first set 6-4. A combination of the slow outdoor courts and the speed of Heaton’s player forced Dunworth into playing an extra shot time and time again and in the end the second set also went Heaton’s way 6-2 to put them 2-0 up overall.
At number 3 Johnny Hughes took on another of Heaton’s coaches on the indoor courts which suited Johnny’s blistering groundstrokes and all round power game. In a tight match Hughes prevailed 7-5, 7-6 and got a much needed point on the board for Chapel Allerton. In the last singles match Chapel Allerton’s Daniel Alfelua was locked in a lengthy duel which was integral to the overall match. Dan dropped the first set on a tie-break but recovered well to take the second set 6-4, forcing the match into a deciding tie-break to 10 points. With the rest of his team watching on anxiously Alfelua showed nerves of steel to romp home 10-2 in the tie-break which meant the tie was all square heading into the doubles matches.
We headed back outside to play the doubles and decided on the pairs. Playing at 1 was Tottey & Hughes, a pair who have played lots of matches together and the other pair was the untried Jacob & Dan. This proved to be a great pairing as Jacob & Dan eased their way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory with both players dominating the net. This put Chapel A 3-2 up and with Johnny & Tottey taking the first set 6-3 with some inspired tennis things looked good for Chapel A. However Matt McTurk refused to give in and through some great all round doubles play Heaton took the second set 6-4. The match tie-break swung both ways, with Chapel A leading 5-2 before crumbling and losing 10-6. This mean the match had to go into a shootout to decide the winner.
For the shootout Tottey selected himself and Hughes to play in the singles – both would play 1 match tie-break against an opposing player to decide a winner. If it was 1-1 after the singles then the remaining players would play a doubles. Tottey surprisingly found himself again the youngster from Heaton and took no risks to bring home the first win 10-3. On the next court Johnny started strong before suddenly finding himself 8-6 down, however he recovered to win the singles 10-8 and claim the win for Chapel Allerton.
The next match for the team is a home game against Huddersfield on the 8th of May.
