Pontefract Seconds 0 Chapel A Firsts 5

Venue – Pontefract

  1. Pedro Pinto beat Katie Smith 14-12, 12-10, 11-6.

Not to be underrated Katie Smith, but I think this is what Pedro did perhaps a little in the first. She has a nice touch if given time and is quite unorthodox so with these skills Smith took an early lead in the first. Pedro managed to pick up the pace just in the nick of time though to secure the first in a tie-break. Almost the same thing happened in the second too, but Pedro was just a little too physically strong around the middle of the court. The third saw more dominance from Pedro and perhaps a little fatigue from Smith to see a three game victory for the Portugese player.

  1. Jackson Beresford beat Ben Hodgetts 11-5, 11-4, 11-7.

Debut appearance for our Kiwi guest Jackson against Hodgetts. Jackson, 22 is over from New Zealand for a couple of months with a view to coming back to base himself here for PSA. He has been beating up a few of our familiar Chapel A faces in training so was going to be interesting to see him in a proper match. Ponte 2 were struggling with injuries it has to be said so Hodgetts and Smith had moved up from the 3rd team to help out. It was quite evident though that Hodgetts was struggling a tad at this level as Jackson applied a lot of pressure, taking the ball nice and early and hitting with pace. That is basically what happened for the duration of the match as Jackson was about 3 yards further up the court than Hodgetts culminating in another victory for Chapel.

  1. Simon Parke beat Harry Anderson 5-11, 11-5, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6.

People are always banging on about age, but come on, Parke (45), Anderson (16)?? Surely that’s not fair. I could almost be his grandad, or at the very least a very old uncle. Anyway, I knew Harry pretty well from having occasionally trained at Ponte in group sessions. Hadn’t seen him play recently though and perhaps that was my downfall for parts of the match as he raced to a one love lead. He produced some wonderful flicks and drop shots managing to wrong foot me quite often, it was clear I was going to have to dig deep for this one. The second and third games I got back in front and was able to control the ball and Anderson better to go 2-1 up. The fourth I was 8-2 up, and just a little bit of fatigue, a strange “Ponte let” decision, and improved play from Anderson meant that I somehow lost that game. So another five setter for me, and the need for drawing on all my 135 years of experience to finally get the job done 11-6.

  1. Owain Taylor beat Matt Godson 11-9, 11-2, 12-14, 11-5.

Owain was up against Ponte team captain and much improved player Godson. Godson has become renowned for his fitness, running 5 miles every morning 7 days a week before 2 squash sessions every day! So it was up to Owain to be proactive and dominant, playing to his strengths, which is volleying and attacking. The first was close but I think it took a bit out of Godson, Owain wrapping the second up with ease. In the third Godson showed his fighting spirit and ability for a second wind taking it in a tie-break, but then our man got his focus back taking the fourth with relative ease.

  1. Mark Fuller beat Elliot Ridge 13-11, 11-3, 11-6.

Ridge is another talented Ponte junior at 17 I think, but Mark, as a lot of you will know by now, takes no prisoners. Mark was actually in a bit of a hurry to get back to a family holiday in Worksop Centreparcs but Ridge wasn’t in the mood to be blown away, taking an early lead in the first. Mark had to work hard (as he does) to get some points on the board but was able to win the crucial last point to take the first in a tie-break 13-11. It was only going one way after that’s Mark started to relax into his metronomic rhythm and frustrate the youngster taking the next two and securing a 5-0 whitewash for Chapel A’s first team.

Simon Parke.
