Chapel A- Weasel Champions 2016

01st Apr 2016

On Sunday 20th March the Weasel Trophy was returned to the Chapel A trophy cabinet for the first time in 3 years after the Ladies and Gentlemen of Chapel A completed a comprehensive 15-7 win over local rivals Roundhay.

This annual pre-season match was the brainchild of Roundhay captain Chris Harper and former Chapel A chairman Jesper Paul and it involves two men’s and one ladies team from each club playing off for a stuffed weasel on a plinth.

This year Chapel A hosted the ladies and the men’s 1st team matches with the men’s 2nd team heading over to Roundhay.

Veteran captain John Rutherford was missing a couple of his big names from the 1st team  but this didn’t stop a team with a good blend of youth and experience winning 6 matches to 3 overall.

Jacob Dunworth and Johnny Hughes won all three of their matches although the general miserable look on Hughes’ face throughout would have suggested otherwise. Josh Wright was excellent on his Weasel debut playing alongside the injured Chris Wickett and the pair managed to win a rubber before Chris’ sore neck finally gave in. Captain John and Christian Nembhard did their job with 2 wins out of 3 to put Chapel A into a commanding position in the match overall.

The ladies team consisted of 2 pairs and with the fearsome Jo Wright in action this pretty much guaranteed Chapel A a couple of wins playing alongside Rosie Clarke. Emma Waters and Kasia Hiorns nearly made it a ladies whitewash but were pipped in a match tiebreak to give the ladies a 3-1 win overall.

Over at Roundhay, oblivious to events at Chapel A, the 2nd team managed to emulate the 1sts with another 6-3 win. The team of David Corbyn, Danny Thomas, Rob Barrett, Theo Nzegwu, Christian Kaiser and Dan Chubb were made to work for their victory however.

Chubb and Kaiser, on their way to 3 wind from 3, managed to save 5 set points in their second match coming back from 6-2 down in the tie-break. Later on, Chubb and Barrett both managed to fail to close out separate matches serving at 5-3 40-0 in the second set. Thankfully neither of these turned out to be costly. Barrett and Nzegwu won 2 out of 3 matches and Thomas and Corbyn finally managed to wake up after a slow start to demolish Roundhay’s strongest pair 6-2 6-2 in their final rubber.

This result puts us into the new season brimming with confidence and we look forward to some rematches with Roundhay throughout the summer.

Remember team practice has now started on Wednesday evenings for the men and will kick off on the first Monday in April for the ladies. We are keen to get a strong squad for all of the teams so if you are interested in playing team tennis and maybe representing Chapel A in next year’s Weasel please come along.IMG_3359
